Semester GPA formula
Semester GPA = total grade points ÷ total credit hours. Each course contributes (grade points × credits) — for example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course earns 12 grade points. Add up every course’s grade points, divide by total credits, and round to two decimals. On the standard 4.0 scale, A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0, with plus/minus variants in between.

What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?
Semester GPA covers one term only, while cumulative GPA averages every course you have ever completed. Colleges look at both: semester GPA shows recent performance, cumulative GPA determines graduation honors and overall standing.
Do all schools use the same GPA scale?
Most US colleges use the 4.0 scale, but plus/minus values and weighted scales (Honors +0.5, AP/IB +1.0) vary by school. Check your institution’s grading policy if you need an official figure — this calculator follows the widely used standard scale.
Do pass/fail courses count toward my semester GPA?
No. Pass/fail (or satisfactory/unsatisfactory) courses earn credit but are excluded from GPA math. Only include letter-graded courses in the calculator.
