Grade Weight Calculator

Not every assignment is worth the same. A final exam worth 40% of your grade moves the needle far more than a quiz worth 5% — and points don’t tell the story until they’re weighted. Enter what you earned, what was possible, and each item’s weight to see exactly where your grade stands.

How to use the Grade Weight Calculator

  1. Enter points earned and possible — exactly as they appear in your gradebook.
  2. Enter each item’s weight — its share of the final grade from your syllabus.
  3. Calculate — see your weighted percentage and letter grade.
  4. Experiment — change upcoming items’ scores to see how they would move your grade.

Grade weight formula

Weighted grade = Σ((earned ÷ possible) × weight). Each item first becomes a percentage, then is scaled by its weight: 92/100 on homework worth 20% contributes 18.4 points. Add every contribution for your grade. Because the math uses your actual total weight, the result is exact even when part of the course isn’t graded yet — the calculator tells you what share of the grade is accounted for.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between points and weights?

Points measure how you did on one item (92 out of 100); weight measures how much that item matters (20% of the course). A perfect score on a 5%-weight quiz contributes just 5 points, while 80% on a 40%-weight exam contributes 32.

Can I include extra credit?

Yes — enter earned points above the possible (e.g. 105 out of 100). The item will contribute more than its weight, which is exactly how extra credit should work.

My professor uses total points instead of weights. What do I do?

Then every point is already equally weighted: just add earned and possible across everything. Or convert to weights with (item points ÷ total course points) × 100 and use this calculator.
