Convert your percentage to GPA on the 4.0 scale.
Convert your percentage grade to GPA on the standard US 4.0 scale instantly. Enter your percentage — the calculator maps it using the standard conversion table.
Standard US 4.0 scale: 93–100=4.0, 90–92=3.7, 87–89=3.3, 83–86=3.0, 80–82=2.7, 77–79=2.3, 73–76=2.0, 70–72=1.7, 67–69=1.3, 65–66=1.0, below 65=0.0
You scored 87% — what is that as a GPA? Converting percentage to GPA is a routine step on US university applications, and the mapping is not always intuitive. Enter your percentage above for the instant answer, then read on to understand the conversion.

How to Use the Percentage to GPA Converter
- Enter your percentage — for example, 85.
- Click Convert to GPA — your GPA on the standard 4.0 scale appears instantly.
- Use the table below to see exactly which letter band your percentage falls in.
The converter uses the standard US letter-grade bands. The sections below show exactly how the mapping works.
02
The Percentage to GPA Formula
There are two accepted methods:
Method 1 — quick formula:
GPA = (Percentage / 100) x 4.0
Example: 85% gives (85 / 100) x 4.0 = 3.4
Method 2 — letter-grade lookup (more standard):
Match your percentage to its letter band, then take the band GPA. Example: 85% is a B, which maps to 3.0.
Most US schools and our converter use the letter-band method, because a flat formula overvalues middle percentages. Note the difference: 85% is 3.4 by formula but 3.0 by the standard table.
03
Percentage to GPA Conversion Table (4.0 Scale)
The standard US mapping used by our converter:
- 97–100% = A+ = 4.0
- 93–96% = A = 4.0
- 90–92% = A- = 3.7
- 87–89% = B+ = 3.3
- 83–86% = B = 3.0
- 80–82% = B- = 2.7
- 77–79% = C+ = 2.3
- 73–76% = C = 2.0
- 70–72% = C- = 1.7
- 67–69% = D+ = 1.3
- 65–66% = D = 1.0
- Below 65% = F = 0.0
So 85% converts to a 3.0 GPA — the same result our converter gives.
04
Formula vs Lookup Table: Which to Use?
The quick formula is fine for rough estimates, but it has a flaw: it treats every percentage point equally, while real grading bands do not. A 90% (A-) and a 92% (A-) earn the same 3.7, but the formula gives them different values.
For anything official — applications, scholarships, resumes — use the letter-band lookup. That is what admissions offices expect.
05
What Is a Good GPA?
- 3.5+ (about 90%+): competitive for most selective universities and merit scholarships.
- 3.0–3.4 (83–89%): solid and above average; meets most university admission baselines.
- 2.5–2.9 (77–82%): average range; fine for many programs with a strong application.
- Below 2.5: consider retaking courses or highlighting improvement trends.
Context matters: a 3.2 in a rigorous AP-heavy schedule can impress more than a 3.6 in easy courses.
06
Weighted Percentages and Other Scales
If your percentage comes from weighted courses (Honors or AP), convert to the letter GPA first using the table above, then add the weight bonus: +0.5 for Honors, +1.0 for AP/IB.
Converting from a non-US system (for example, a 10-point scale)? Convert to a percentage first using your board's official method, then use this converter.
07
Common Conversion Mistakes
- Using the raw formula for official forms. 75% is 3.0 by formula but 2.0 by the standard table — a big difference.
- Forgetting plus/minus bands. 89% is a B+ (3.3), not a B (3.0).
- Mixing weighted and unweighted. Decide which GPA the form wants before converting.
- Rounding the percentage first. Convert from the exact percentage, then round the GPA to two decimals.
